There is a long history and deep tradition to Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture and this resiliency through the ages is due to the effectiveness of the practice. The medicine takes a holistic approach by working with the body’s functional energy, or Qi (pronounced /chee/; also spelled as Chi or Ki) and ensuring it’s smooth flow through the body. Normally, when Qi is working at peak performance, it regulates the body so that everything operates properly and corrects conditions of dis-ease. Due to stresses on the body, such as poor diet, work stress, too much or not enough exercise, injury, and illness, the body's Qi can become depleted or lose it's free flow. As the stresses continue, the depletion and obstruction of Qi also continues, making it ever more difficult to correct on it's own. When Qi isn’t flowing properly, pain ensues; this can present as bloating and distention to more severe migraines or stronger abdominal cramping. When Qi isn’t full, it causes lethargy, easy catching of colds, loss of appetite, and slow digestion, among other discomforts throughout the body.
Acupuncture helps get the bodies Qi back to proper function, working towards fortifying the Qi and harmonizing it's flow. The cumulative effects of treatments will lead to reduced stress, relief from aches and pains, and improved energy, sleep, digestion and recovery from illnesses and injuries. Restoring and maintaining harmony within can also be beneficial during weight loss and when trying to quit smoking. Acupuncture not only helps in the recovery of illnesses but also helps to keep you well through the seasons.
Acupuncture has been proven effective in the treatment of headaches, hypertension, allergic rhinitis, depression, and nausea as well as body pains ranging from neck pain, tennis elbow, abdominal pain, sciatica, and knee pain. It has also been found effective in treating neuralgias, sleep issues, and infertility.
Meet our Acupuncturist
Matthew Truhan, LAc
Matthew has traveled long and far to find his home in Bend. Born and raised in Key West, FL, his interest in the sciences led him to complete his Bachelors of Science in Microbiology at the University of Florida in Gainesville, FL. From Florida, Matthew's love of the water and surfing took him to San Diego, CA where he met his wife and found his calling in the healing arts as an Acupuncturist.
His passion for helping others inspired him to become a massage therapist and motivated him through the Masters of Science program in Traditional Oriental Medicine (TCM) at Pacific College of Oriental Medicine. The crowded city life of San Diego helped instill a greater appreciation and love for the outdoor life. Being filled with water and surrounded by forests made Bend the perfect choice for the next chapter of their life together.
Matthew's interest in Chinese Medicine draws from the holistic view of the medicine, along with the naturalistic ideas of returning the body's internal environment to harmony and balance. As an Acupuncturist, he is rooted in his compassion and his wish to bring comfort and good health to his patients, striving to listen to his their needs, and focusing his warm hands and caring heart to provide a relaxing and healing space. He helps harmonize and balance his patients with an open thought process employing different diagnosing strategies (Zang-Fu Theory, Channel Theory, 5 Element) and therapeutic techniques, including massage, acupuncture, herbs, as well as other complementary techniques.
